Grow Out Tanks!

New to breeding BNs, and as yet, not done it. I'm starting to panic though! I hadn't realised I'd need a tank to grow the young on!

Would it hurt to leave them with the adults in my 80cm tank if there are no other fish? I think the Mrs will eat me alive if I say I need another tank! My 4ft I plan to put African Cichlids in, so can't really put babies in there can I?

My other option is to forget the Cichlids and use the other tank. Would Coral Sand hurt the fish? I know it buffers the water quite high, and also hardens it. Would that be an issue?

I am sure Deano will give you the correct answer re afrian chilids as he keeps them

I keep BN's in with my Discus without a problem

you can leave them with the parents to a exctent i do. but the problem you will have is by the time their a couple of centimeters the parents will have spawnd again Laughing

then your going to start running out of room and the fish are going to start getting stunted.

no you cannot put baby bristlenose in with the cichlids safely. reason being your cichlids will start to eat them and they get stuck in their mouths. and the cichlid cannot spit them back out and can result in two deaths.

yes coral sand is ok for them they dont mind hard water and if your not going to buffer with anyting else its fine .i keep most my baby on bare bottom tanks but some of my breeders are on coral

Eventually you "will" need another tank. Once they start breeding you could get away with a few spawns left with the parents but you "will" start getting huge Nitrate spikes and this is what will stunt your fish's development , you can remedy this more frequent water changes- much easier in a seperate tank with your babies.

Ok, thanks Deano, valuable info. What about Adults with the Cichlids? Water will be buffered with ocean rock and coral sand. No manmade buffers. That way I could split the 'rents up for a bit, and keep the spawns to one every couple of months or so, PLUS keep my Cichlids clean! Would that work?
