I just picked up some nice slate from the garden centre for my tank. Much better and much cheaper than a lfs. anyway, is just washing it going to be sufficeint or should I do something specail like boil it, to make sure it's clean? Advice welcome please

I just washed mine in boiling hot water, then gave it a good old rinse

hot water and a good scrub and a rinse will be fine garden centers are really cheap for slate the one i use charges £3 for a large chunk

Sodium meta-bisulphate is perfect for this - being a gas it can into all the nooks and crannies, then just rinse in
cold water.
