I have a few live plants, but also have some plastic ones floating in my tanks at the very top. In theory I am growing algae on them to supplement the needs of my Bns. They love it and are often seen feeding off them as the sides of my tanks are very clean.

Are there any risks i should consider by doing this? Or am I doing the right thing?

I can not see any risks, but there are other methods for growing algae as discussed in THIS POST .

It is not a question of wrong or right.

My objection is that this set-up is not natural.

Good Read lots of info in the post jim.and - I have to confess I also have added some plastic floating plants to have areas for algae to grow-so far it has worked so far although the natural approach would definitely be more to my liking- mmccannon I'm not a fan of the unnatural- however at minus -30*C right now outside find it rather impossible to try this out yet when it warms up though definitely!

Jeff, So long as your fish are healthy and live in healthy conditions you can create a more natural enviroment as and when budgets allow.

I can vouch for Jeff as he has a beautiful environment for his BN's. They are healthy and gorgeous and very happy!!! And your success and survival rates are amazing- and say so much about how much you care about them!!! You care so much for your BN's that making room for all the babies, so they could grow to their full potential, not become unhealthy and not be stressed was your priory not making money- to me that says it all- you care about your BN's and their comfort and happiness. I have been keeping fish for over 3 years and have yet to reach the level you are at! and all the beautiful, healthy specimens I have thanks to you have brought such joy and happiness to my children and family to a level I can not express. When my budget allows as I understand what you mean I would love to have all natural everything but it will take time and with all the great info here in the summer I think I may try growing some natural algae- but as you know weather just does not permit it here right now just a teech too cold yet!!
