Hello!! A month ago I bought these fish and the seller told me that there are two females and a male but not know for sure what L is.

I caught the male only slightly because it hides all the time




I think that they are Ancistrus Hoplogenys L059 because one of my females looks same like the one in the aricle wich we have on this forum about L059. If u have any informations about breading or keeping this darlings please do not hesitate. Thank you!

they look like orange spots to me.

however, your second female is a male.

Very very Humbly, (because there more experienced people here that maybe able to help you more.)

I would like to suggest L180?, yesterday I was looking at a tank of what they said were L180's the females, also had a few small bristles and the spots were yellowish, orangey and whitish on different specimens, the males looked identical even the pattern of bristle growth is almost a copy.

Also the colour change in the first pic to the second of the same female is very much like what I saw yesterday- even the patterns of mottling-very similar, the only thing is there were a few individuals which were a lighter shade of black/brown and almost grey. I had not seen L-180 like that before I was reluctant to buy yesterday.
Just what I saw here in Canada in a very reputable LFS. sorry if it doesn't help much.


Also I think female two may be male also.

Honestly though without more info about them, size and their development over the last month, their diet etcetera; other more experienced keepers maybe can help you ID them definitively.

I can not see any of the orange markings in the fins to suggest it Ancistrus hoplogenys (L059), but to ID clearer pictures would help and the size of the larger of the TWO males would also help.

Do they look like the fish on the right of the banner at the top of the page?, which is a female L182.

Iam only seeing one female which is the common brown longfin......

All the others suggest young L182's execpt for the last male pic which looks like a more mature L182 Male possibly 2 years old.....

Its very easy to suggest they are L180's but im pretty sure they are L182's or as doug said Orange spot formally known in Oz Land..

And the pics could really do with resizing.....

Thank you Doug for solving my pictures problem. Is first time dooing this. About the second female i will try to take a few more pictures. The idea is that when i bought this fishes the guy told me that I have 2 females and 2 males. The diference was obvious because the shape of the body as that guy sayed 'the males are larger than the females and female no 2 have same shape and size like female no 1, the male is much larger than both females. Unfortunately male no 2 jumped from my aquarium and he deyed a feu hours later. In conclusion the females are very slim comparative with the male. I will try to take a few more pictures if not I will take them out for some picures but I dont want to stress the fishes. Doug about the size of the picture, what size should be? I tried to keep a good quality 1280 x 1280 but I can make them more smaller. Sory about the picture with the long fin female, I put it there without any intention.
First i tought that ther are 180 or 182 but the shape of the head is not like L180 or 182 is more like a triangle or sharper not rounded like 180 and 182. I dont know if you got the idea and the spot are orage and white all over the body. and they have that orange contour like hoplogenys. Maybe with next pictures we would see beter.
