PostSubject: Storing filtered water   Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:00 pm

I'm thinking of storing filtered water for later water change use. I use an API Tap Water Filter, because my tap water has a high mineral content and is quite hard and also because I elected for a somewhat lower PH for the Tetras I keep. When I let the filter cartridge sit with tap water in between water changes it losses its effectiveness quickly. I would like to maximize the use of each filter cartridge and make about 48 gallons of filtered water at a time and store it in a large, heavy duty, covered trash can in the basement. I change about eight gallons of water each week so it would be enough to last me 6 weeks. I would add the Electoright, PH UP, and warm each portion of water to the tank temperature just before using it. Does anyone see a problem with this? I have a 38 gallon fully planted tank, with 72 watts of light, a PH of 6.6 kept at a temperature of 80 degrees.

i wouldnt use a trash can, they are not make of the right stuff. I would use either a plastic storage tub designed for food or a rainwater tank as these are made from plastic that does not leach chemicals into the water. you will have to keep the water moving so it doesnt become stagnant.

Plastic food grade 44G drum and a small pond powerhead should do you the trick. Besides connecting a hose to the powerhead allowes for easy emptying Smile

I looked on Craigslist and found several 55 gallon drums (supposedly food grade) between $15 and $25 each. Now I just need to find a powerhead for a reasonable price, Maybe I'll try Aquabid.
Thanks, Bob
