PostSubject: Sterbai Egg's   Mon Oct 17, 2011 11:16 pm

Well while waiting for the 181's to fatten up and the ALF to grow out and the SR to get bigger i had a side project of breeding sterbai, having never tryed corys before i thought i would just get involved,

well......

i thought they where nearly ready, or so i thought, came home at lunch today, gave them a feed on frozen brine shrimp, went back work.......got in at 6 and there it was.....the back and side wall of my covered with a clutch of egg's.... nice...

then it dawned on me i have not set up a fry tank or anything else....doh !!!!!!

so i improvised and made a breeding net,

took an old breeding net i had, well the plastic bits anyway, and one of the larger fish nets i have (very very small holes).....about 6" wide, dropped the box inside the net, bent the metal round the top, dropped in the eggs and an airstone, stuck it to the side of the main tank...and......

well,

i'll keep ya posted Smile

lets see if this make shift job works Smile

well three laying sessions later of 4 days, some of my first batch have hatched, i pulled the last lot of the wall tonight and i recon i have about 100 eggs, maybe 80 ish will make it...a few off colour, set up 3 breeding nets with them in, i was told to move all of the fungus or what i thought where fungused eggs into there own net as there hard lil chaps and poss will still produce a wriggler Smile

got about 7 out of eggs at the mo and lots more to come...hopefully......

sterbais in a few months if anyones interested Smile

PostSubject: Re: Sterbai Egg's   Mon Oct 24, 2011 9:16 am

well they went again and again, lol

seams the trigger was a cool water change then a feeding of brine shrimp every other day, everythime i feed them brine shrimp they spawned 3/4 hours later,

they have not let 4 batches of eggs go Smile

so, i have 3 breeding nets in the main tank where i have scoopted the eggs into,

net 1 has about 14/20 hatched and there lil tiny wrigglers Smile i think i lost about 5 eggs to fungus in this net, (had airstone in it)
net 2 these are 2 days younger, theres about 45 eggs in this one, so far i have counted about 8 wrigglers so far havent seen any fungussed eggs at all in this net will let you know about this in a few days,
net 3 has the last 2 batches of eggs in it so around 50 ish plus all still lite brown colour, day or so left for these at least,

so i recon i got about 20+ hatched so far, should have another 20+ by the end of today and well 40+ more by thursday if all goes well,

i'll try get some pics of the parents, egg's and the wrigglers Smile

and just to top it off, my Cory Juli's in the community tank have just started laying also, only problem is getting them out, the gorami's and danio's are faster than my pipette Smile

Yeah, cool (at least 10 Celsius) wc and lots of Tubifex and Brine shrimp before spawning does the trick.
Wish you all the very best bringing up the next generation.

thanks guys Smile am a little excited as its my first lot of corys Smile

erm..... i had the tank up at 25 degree's and dropped in about 18 degree water change,

never really tells you anywhere what a cold water change is suppose to be, lol......

was feeding them with King Britten catfish pellets, bloodworm, some random vegtable pellets, think they where tetra pro, and then the shrimp to trigger,

Smile
