Hi,
I was looking for peat moss to put in my filter to lower my pH a bit. I went to some fish shops and couldn't find any
but they had these bricks of peat at Bunnings.
The only one that had anything close to not having any chemicals in it was the one that said 100% organic on the front.



I assume coco-peat has some coconut husk in it? Has anyone used anything like this? Is it safe?

I have used peat in the past and it works well if used properly. using it properly needs to be researched as it can casue large drops and lots of tannin release.

In regards to using this stuff, i would def tread carefully. I would look for proper aquariums stuff. even have a look online. maybe someone can shead more light on this stuff, i have only used Eheim peat and therefore cant really comment more.

I would also opt for a peat media made by the likes of Eheim, Sera and other. They are easily available online through aqatic stores and auction sites.

As you say coco peat is made from coconut husks as an alternative for natural peat and is used by Killifish breeders but more as a substrate rather than for lowering pH..

Thanks, I can't seem to find any peat moss in Australia that has no added chemicals or/and isn't coconut husks.
I've checked online and in shops .
I've boiled oak leaves and extracted tannin from it but the extract starts to grow a film and little hair like things after a week. How long is tannic acid extract usually keepable for?
I'm not really in a rush to change pH but it is a little high.

Eheim peat moss FTW. I used it before n it's good stuff

ive found that coco peat isny effective. i would go for spaghum peat moss which is real where coco is made from coconut peelings
