Has anybody kept and breed these with success????

What can be kept with them in a large communtiy???

I have around 400 Litres of space available......

Also what are the positives and negatives with discus.........

To get some decent wild caught ones at about 5inches across you arelookingat £60 - £85 each depending on what you get. Also not a fish to breed in a community as the eggs and young would get eaten , and they are far to valuable to become other fish food.

They like nice soft water with plenty of plants like Amazon swords to lay eggs on. You can also use a breeding cone.

Personally I love them but if I was going to keep them again it would be in a species only tank not a community.

i got them in my display tank. I love them.

they are expensive but they are so colourful. Breeding it a bit tricky but it can be done. I have had mine spawn in their tank a few times but never had any hatch as the other fish eat the eggs.

Water quality becomes one of the big issues with them. I have 2 eheim canister on my 4ft tank to make sure the water is always perfect. I also do 2 water changes a week to ensure they are happy.

I studied them long and hard before i got them. any questions just flick em my way.

Are there any really rare one's (expensive one's).

From what I've viewed on the discus, they are a more passive fish, they don't really dart around the tank, they move at a nice leisurely pace (gives you more time to view their stunning beauty though). They come in a variety of colours, though each pattern certainly has its price tag. They do prefer soft acidic water from what I heard. I'd keep them really only with their own type, though I wouldn't see BNs as an issue at all. Bought some gravel of a guy yesturday, he showed me his discus tank, had about 15 in a 220L tank with neon tetras, rummy nose tetras and a few BNs. He said he plans to breed them once they're old enough. They were very active and nicely coloured.

In Australia, they are incredibly expensive, with juveniles being as cheap at about $50 minimum for certain patterns, to being as costly as $300 each for the adults that have the most stunning patterns. People who have owned these say the ones with least amount of peppering on them are more preferred and also more valuable. If you can breed them, you'll get some good money.

yeah, when it comes to dicsus they like the soft acidic water just like bristlenose do. they are very touchy fish though and need to be treated well.

the are the only truely schooling chiclids and as such like to be in groups of five or more. they can be kepts in smaller groups but they will only show their full colours when they are totally destressed and more discus the more relaxed they are.

The like room to swim as well so i need to keep my plants in check otherwise they swamp out all the room.

they also like a lot of good high quality food too, live food is very much loved by them.

THe rare ones over here are prob different to those over there. as SS mentioned in aus a juvi from a show of poor quality will be about $50. i take it they are a bit cheeper over there than here. I would def recommend getting some cheeper ones to start with tho, as they can be a bit tricky to start with.

I just got 7 well 8 but 1 DOA...from a fish buddy (free) at my LFC and they are my first attempt at having them. Mine are dime sized. I have them in a 10g have to do daily W/C 60-70% for them as stated the water quality is VERY important for them to grow and have full color when they are older. Mine are green snakeskins very expensive fish if buying, but they will look stunning if I manage to get them full grown. I wish you the best of luck if you try these fish as they are very cool to watch, so graceful...

Just waiting on my 5ft tank to arrive and cycle before i can purchase some..

just remember if you get smaller ones Don't put in a big tank..they don't do well in to big of tanks til they grow abit. mine will stay in a 10g til there atleast 3 inches or the size of a tennis ball..thou I will be moveing them around to get the more aggressive ones at feeding time away from the slower ones so they all grow at the same pace. this is on the advice of my friend who gave them to me.

i have eggs at the moment hopfully they will get it right this time
