I hope to be breeding BNs soon (within the next few months), so what would be the best sized tank for the fry? I would move the dad, cave and eggs into the other tank and when the fry are free swimming and have absorbed their yolk sac i would put dad back into his original tank.

the fry should be sold quickly so they would be in the tank a maximum of 2 months...

so what sized tank would be best?

i have been told that at least 120-140 litres as a nursery tank but i am on a budget, although i am always looking for a bargain, £100 is my price range i hope the tank would be used only for a few months for fry, max 2 years because i hope to buy a six foot tank, this will let me use my current tank which is 125 litres for a nursery tank.

60 litres + is fine for 1 pair as long as you have another small tank for the young...

PS: how many pairs could be in a 6 foot tank roughly? bearing in mind that there would be other fish in the tank, the dad, cave and fry would be moved into a 125L tank until they are free swimming without the yolk sac

PS Again: Curby, did you receive my e-mail? i think the picture attached and it sent OK, just making sure

rule of thumb - one male per 1.5 square feet of tank bottom and 2 females per male. that is for mature bristlenose.

If there are other fish then it will depend on what the other fish are. If they are things like larger plecos, corys or any other bottom dwelling fish then you will not be able to have as many.

the other thing to consider is having other fish around may help or hinder breeding. things like loaches are going to hinder it, things like guppies might help it.

thanks for the heads up Doug, I don't have any loaches at the moment so they won't be a problem, just out of interest, how could guppies help breeding? Because it might be worth setting up three more tanks, one 6 foot one for a community possibly a couple of BNs for breeding, my old 125 litre tank for two more pairs and a slightly smaller one for fry

there is some evidence to suggest that having other fish in the tank breeding can help trigger breeding from bristlenose. I personally have never seen any evidence to support this but people have said it helps and who am i to disagree

I would have one breeding pair in the big tank, one in the small tank and have the 125ltr one for the fry. trust me, you need volume for the fry!
