Just wondering which type of moss people favour, as there seem to be a lot out there. Have been considering java moss, but it seems to get mixed reviews as lots of people say it is invasive and just takes over the whole tank.

My ever changing (and hopefully thus improving) tank contains numerous bristlenoses of various sizes - I am currently rehoming the big ones as they reach full size. Have 2 full size females and an unknown amount of little ones. Other than that I have 5 zebra danios, 5 neon tetras, 3 ghost shrimps, 1 ramshorn snail, and 4 apple snails.

Female ghost shrimp is full of eggs, so would be nice for the little ones to have somewhere to hide before the danios hoover them up (like they do to their own babies!)

Is java a blessing or a curse? Is there a less invasive variety which does the job just as well? hmm...

Java moss is good!

The thing is that if there is a lot of nutrients and light it can get a bit much but you just need to keep it in check. Trim it if it starts to get a bit too bushy.

There are other types of moss as well, some of them take a bit longer to grow and are more managable under high growth situations

oops, missed this reply! Thanks, I am still wavering about the java - maybe if I get some attached to small lava rocks I can take them out easily for a trim. Bought some peacock moss, a windelov fern, and some random lucky dip plants ready for the big tidy up and redecorate session this weekend.

must be the big Java moss, always a good sound plant to have growing on your bogwood....

though must admit I do not put many live plants in any more, as too many nasty things get transported in to the tank too often with them...
