PostSubject: Att: Doug - New Fry Info   Sat Jul 10, 2010 10:12 am

To add to Doug's research:

My Calico Long Fins finally emerged from their cave 3 days ago.

I bought the colony of 7 as juvies around 18 months ago. They came from 'pure' (Lol) Calico Long Fin Parents.

I have counted approximately 60 fry

Approximately 20 are Albino the rest are Calico.

It is too early to say for sure wether they are long fin or not but will update when I can confirm.

Hope this helps guys Smile

Pete

This calico and albino thing is one to watch and to any who make color test breedings, to investigate further. Going over my notes I am seeing a connection between calico and albino, don't know if it's a co-incidence or not yet, as there isn't enough data, but this is the first couple of colors that may have some sort of relationship. What type of albino are they? The pale yellow spotted type? That's what most albino long fin seem to be. Too young to tell, but could you add that info along with the fin type when you update?
I am hearing about two types of calico also. One that is brownish with the red patches and the other more solid looking, like a red fish dipped in dark chocolate. Just speculation now, but what if the red patched ones were factored for albino (or one specific type of albino) and the darker ones not?

The ones that bread are a more golden colour with the brown blotches. I have a couple in the colony that are very dark brown with the gold colour underneith but they are still too small to breed so I have them in a seperate tank for now.

I must say, i am suprised at the amount of albino that came through..

PostSubject: UPDATE   Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:29 pm

Just moved the fry to their own tank tonight and confirm the following:

TOTAL: 82 Fry (Pretty good for their first spawn!!)

CALICO: 53

ALBINO: 29

Still too small to confirm if they are long fin.

Will keep the updates coming as they develop..

Pete.

PostSubject: Batch #2   Mon Aug 02, 2010 11:28 am

Batch #2

Different female, same group as previously mentioned.

Approximately the same number of fry and approximately the same ratio of Calico to Albino.

Batch #1

Update.. It appears that nearly, if not all, are longfin. Its still a little early but the tail finnage is definitely longer than that of a regular short fin fry.

Will keep the updates coming as they get older..

Update after a long time away from the site!! Wink

Have had another 2 more spawns since the last update and the boy is on eggs again.

The first batch are now big enough to determine if they are long fin and it seems that about half are long fin.. in fact there are more lf albino's than calico's unfortunately.

The last two spawns are, again, similar numbers, but because there is so many of the buggers now its hard to get acccurate figures.

Looking forward to growing the first batch up big enough to sell... the cash would be nice! Smile
