| Would it be right in saying then that the difference between albino commons and L144 are the colour eyes and that the L144's dont seem to be spotty like the common albino's??? I have just picked up 3 juvi fish that the owner said were albino longfins but as soon as I got a look at them im pretty sure they are L144's... They are very pale with no spots at all and have, what looks like, dark blue eyes (could be black though!) Will post some pics when I have taken some lol!

| Your fish is in my opinion an L-144 long fin. It can not be albino as the eyes are black/blue and not red.
This whole L-144 thing is sort of mixed up. There was originally the L-144 species. This was a color morph of some sort of Paraguayan Ancistrus, species unknown, that was inbred to fix the dark eyed yellow color. These are now extremely rare. I do not believe they showed body spotting, as I have never come across any reference to that, just that they were a muddier yellow then most L-144 today.
Then there is the color morph of the common aquarium strain BN. This is what is commonly known as the L-144 today. I do not know if these occurred spontaneously or represent some hybridization with the species L-144. Usually these are a smaller orange yellow fish with dark eyes. Most do not show body spotting, but I have heard of a few cropping up that do. While some would reserve the term L-144 only for the original species, most today use the term L-144 to describe a yellow body color and dark eyes, with or without a pattern of light body spotting. I have never heard of an original species L-144 with long fins, but know they occur in the common color morph.
As to why your fish are whitish rather than the typical orange yellow, I don't know, it could be related to condition, but is probably genetic. I have seen photos of white L-144 before. |

I have found that as they age they get their colour, and those that remained really pale tended not to make it. |
