| gravel in breeding/grow out tanks is a hot topic of debate.
In general, gravel is purely for looks. If the filter is able to support suffience bactera for the whole tank then there is no need for gravel and it makes the tank a lot easier to keep clean.
I keep a few handfuls of gravel in my tanks to help boost the bactreria numbers but not even enough to cover the bottom of the tank.
